2014 Karthigai Deepam:




Karthigai Deepam festivities at Thiruvannamalai Arunachaleshwara Swamy temple are the most famous one and popularly known as Karthikai Brahmotsavam. Karthigai Deepam festivity at Thiruvannamalai temple spans for 10 days. The celebration begins with Dwajarohanam on the day when Nakshatra Uthiraadam prevails at sunrise. Most of the time, Nakshatra Uthiraadam prevails 10 days before the main Karthigai Deepam day.

Karthigai Deepam festival starts at around four o clock in the early hours and the Bharani Deepam is lit at the temple. In the evening the Mahadeepam is lit on the top of the hill at around six o clock. This is a very important ceremony during the Karthigai Deepam festival at Tiruvannamalai.









Arunachaleswarar is said to be visually represented in the form of agni on the hill top. There is a very mammoth gathering on this day at the Arunachaleswarar temple to witness this glorious and sacred event. The night ceremony starts with Lord Periya nayagar going out procession on the Rishaba vahanam that is made of gold. This is another spectacular event at Arunachaleswar temple at Tiruvannamalai.


Nel Pori:





Ingredients:

  • Nel Pori – 4 cups

  • Jaggery, grated – 1 cup

  • Thinly sliced coconut pieces – 3 tbsp

  • Cardamom powder – 1/2 tsp

  • Water – 1/4 cup


Method:


Heat a pan and add the finely chopped coconut pieces. Dry fry them in low flame till they are dark brown. Dry fry them nicely so that they have no moisture. Take these fried coconut pieces aside.


In a pan add the grated jaggery.Melt the jaggery in water and filter it to remove impurities.Again boil the jaggery water and keep stirring it until the jaggery comes to stone consistency.


Take a little water in a small bowl. This is to check the consistency of the jaggery.Just add a few drops of nicely boiling jaggery into the water.When you take the jaggery syrup from the bowl, you should be able to roll into a ball


Mix the Nel Pori with the jaggery syrup nicely and Remove this pori mixture and pour it in a plate .


​When you are able to handle the mixed pori mixture in your hand, start making balls out of it.
